Zapata Falls Campground is situated in the San Luis Valley of Colorado and offers a breathtaking view of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The nearby Zapata Falls is considered one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Colorado. The campground is equipped with restrooms, picnic tables, and fire pits. The area is first-come, first-serve and has 23 campsites to choose from.

One interesting fact about the area is the presence of the endangered Preble's meadow jumping mouse, which can be spotted in and around the campground. The best time to visit Zapata Falls Campground is from June to September when the average temperature ranges from 60°F to 80°F. However, early summer is considered the optimal time of year to visit as the waterfalls are at their full capacity.

Aside from the nearby Zapata Falls, visitors can also explore the Great Sand Dunes National Park, which is home to some of the tallest sand dunes in North America. The park also has several hiking trails, sandboarding areas, and a scenic drive.
